Simranjit Singh Mann calls for hoisting Nishan Sahib on houses on Aug 14, 15

CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president and Sangrur MP Simranjit Singh Mann on Saturday made an appeal to the Sikh masses to hoist Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) atop their houses on August 14 and 15. This call is in response to Indian PM Narendra Modi’s call of unfurling tricolour, national flag of India, on the houses to mark ‘Independence Day’ on August 15.

While making this appeal through a video over social media, Mann put light on the importance of nishan sahib for Sikhs and gave its historic background. He said, “Sikhs are separate nation. That is why Sikhs can only hoist their own flag”.

Meanwhile, leaders of this party and Panthic organization Dal Khalsa made this announcement during a press conference in Amritsar.

To highlight theirs commitment and aspirations for Punjab’s independence from Indian yoke and also to challenge the BJP led Hindutva Govt for unleashing atrocities on struggling nationalities and religious minorities and downtrodden, the Dal Khalsa along with the support of Akali Dal Amritsar will hold March in Jalandhar on Aug 14 and Public Demonstration on 15 Aug at Moga in Punjab.

They said, “We believe this move by BJP was a clever design to foist pseudo Rashtarvaad on minorities and dissenting people. To make it a success Central Govt has planned to distribute crores of Tricolor flags across the country”.

Discarding PM Modi’s call, they said the Sikhs will unfurl Sikh Flag on their houses on the same days to register their defiance and assert their distinct identity. Our activists will print and distribute Kesri Flags among Sikhs, said they.

Listing the reasons for their protest, they said New Delhi was treating Punjab as its colony, river waters are continuously being looted, injustice is being done to Sikh political prisoners who have completed their sentence term, Sikh youth were being charged under UAPA, and above all the right to self determination was being denied to people of this state.
