SGPC fumed over being blamed by BJP leader for conversion of Sikhs to Christianity

AMRITSAR: Taking strong notice of the controversial statement about the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson RP Singh, the SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said that if RP Singh is actually serious about the issue of religious conversion, then he should get the action done on priority in the SGPC case lying pending on this subject with the Government of India.

He said that raising questions on the Sikh body SGPC, on the issue of religious conversion is not a normal reaction but a deliberate conspiracy under propaganda.

Dhami said that without any doubt, the SGPC is continuously working for preaching and flourishing the Sikh faith, but some people like RP Singh are trying to subvert the prestigious institution of the Sikh community. He said RP Singh raising questions in lieu of the issue of religious conversion on the name of SGPC is reprehensible, and he should apologise for the same.

He said the SGPC is the constitutional body of Sikh community, which is doing work of preaching Sikh faith besides public welfare and humanitarian efforts for the past over 100 years. In addition to management of historical Gurdwaras, the SGPC has made great achievements in the field of health and education.

He said it is reprehensible of BJP spokesperson RP Singh twisting the name of SGPC as a joke, which has hurt the sentiments of Sikh community.

SGPC President said that the issue of religious conversion about which RP Singh is talking, is already being taken up seriously by the SGPC. In this regard, the SGPC has written to Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, Government of India, following which, he had also held a meeting with the representatives of SGPC and the Christian community at his office in Delhi on June 16, 2022.

“If RP Singh is actually serious about religious conversion, then he should ask his party BJP’s Centre government to take action on this matter as represented by SGPC. But if his statement is just to garner headlines and to do propaganda on this issue, then it is extremely unfortunate”, said Dhami.

Notably, RP Singh blamed the SGPC for the conversion of Sikhs to Christianity and stated the SGPC will soon become “Shiromani Church Parbandhak Committee”.
