Holy City Amritsar Sidelined, Ignored in First Budget of AAP Government

CHANDIGARH: The AAP government of Punjab has also followed the footprints of previous governments by adopting step motherly treatment toward the holy city of Amritsar, even as its 450th foundation day is nearing and falls in 2027. It has not earmarked any major funds for this city founded by Guru Ram Das Jee, nor did it make a special announcement for it in the annual budget presented by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema in state assembly.

Members of a non-government organization (NGO) Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM) said in a statement, “Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema visited Amritsar on 10 May, 2022 to know about the immediate financial requirements of the “Guru Nagri”, so that budgetary provisions could be allocated. Residents were very much hopeful that Amritsar will be dealt with judiciously, but they felt discriminated against while watching the live budget speech of the finance minister”.

“Finance minister sanctioned special funds to upgrade Government Hospitals of Patiala and Faridkot to provide “super specialty” facilities only to these hospitals. The Finance Minister deliberately adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Guru Nanak Dev Hospital Amritsar didn’t provide any financial help, whether he was apprised about the poor and dwindling financial condition of the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital Amritsar”, said its patron Kulwant Singh Ankhi.

He said, “Finance Minister very happily sanctioned Rs.200 crores funds to Punjabi University Patiala, but he clearly ignored Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, even not mentioning it. Residents of Amritsar are again feeling cheated from the hands of this new government also, as was in case of previous Punjab Governments”.

Amritsar Vikas Manch demand from the Punjab Government to deliver justice to holy city Amritsar, Punjab Government must reconsider to provide super specialty facilities at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital Amritsar and also sanction a grant of Rs.200 crores to Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar.  Amritsar also needs special funds, authority and provisions for the promotion of tourism.
