Amritsar Sahib: With speculations about the possibility of Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana’s nomination for the Sangrur parliamentary by-poll by SAD (Badal), a debate has erupted among the Sikh circles about the repercussions of this possible move. Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana is a foster sister of political Sikh prisoner Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is a death row convict in the former CM Beant Singh’s assassination case.
A section of the Panth believes that the nomination of Bibi Rajoana under current circumstances will be against the interests of Panth while the remaining are ready to welcome this move keeping in view the sacrifice of living martyr Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.
Sikh activist Papalpreet Singh believes that Bibi Rajoana’s nomination will negatively affect the Simranjit Singh Mann’s position in Sangrur by-poll as she will divide the Sikh vote bank. “At present, Simranjit Singh Mann seems strongest Sikh candidate for the Sangrur by-poll because of Sidhu Moosewala’s wish to support him right before his murder, but if SAD (Badal) nominates Bibi Rajoana it will only cause division of Sikh vote bank,” he says.
He points out that Bibi Rajoana’s nomination can also adversely affect the united efforts being made for the release of political Sikh prisoners as Simranjit Singh Mann may also withdraw from the committee constituted to ensure release of political Sikh prisoners if he finds SAD (Badal) going against his interests.
“We can’t ignore the sacrifice of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana but this is also not the only way to recognize his sacrifice, especially under current circumstances when the Sikhs have already got the strongest Sikh face for Sangrur by-poll,” he says.
On the other hand, Bibi Rajoana’s supporters like Bhai Jang Singh firmly believes that her nomination by the SAD (Badal) for Sangrur by-poll will be in the interests of Panth as SAD (Badal) has its base in the region.
But this claim appears void because the veteran Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa had left SAD (Badal) long ago and at present, Badals led Akali Dal lacks the presence of any influential personality in the Sangrur parliamentary segment.
After considering the arguments of duo sides, it seems like the cons of Bibi Rajoana’s nomination will outweigh the pros for Panth because of current circumstances.
