CHANDIGARH: Cold blooded killing of two Sikh shopkeepers—Ranjit Singh and Sukhjit Singh—in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, has been condemned worldwide and it has again invited criticism for Pakistan where minorities are in vulnerable condition.
Reacting to the killing, Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said, “This is very unfortunate that the Sikhs are being targeted in Pakistan. Such target killings have taken place during the recent past in Peshawar and surrounding area. The Sikhs are living under threat. The Government of Pakistan should get it investigated thoroughly to expose the agency is behind these target killings of Sikhs”.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami said there have been several attacks on Sikhs in Pakistan in the recent past. He said Hakim Satnam Singh was also murdered last year in Peshawar and some days ago, the sons of former President of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) were also attacked by the land mafia. Similarly, there have been several other reports of attacks on minorities in Pakistan.
The SGPC President said such incidents taking place in Pakistan are creating a sense of fear among the minorities, about which the government should be serious.
He said with the birth of Guru Nanak in the present days Pakistan, the message of universal brotherhood was spread all over the world but sadly today the Guru’s (master) Sikhs are being targeted. He said Sikhs have a close relationship with Pakistan as there are many Sikh shrines (Gurdwaras) over there and the Sikhs contribute a lot to its development.
Dhami asked the Government of Pakistan to pay special attention to this issue and ensure the safety of life and property of minority Sikhs living there. He also appealed to the Government of India to take appropriate steps to protect the lives and property of the Sikhs living in Pakistan by holding diplomatic level talks with Government of Pakistan.
The SGPC President has demanded that miscreants who shot dead two Sikhs in Peshawar, Pakistan today should be put behind the bars immediately & justice should be delivered to the families at the earliest.
Former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Paramjit Singh Sarna urged Pakistan’s new federal government and the provincial government of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region to ensure safety of Sikh minorities in that country.
Meanwhile, Dal Khalsa leaders said every then and now, Sikhs are being targeted in Kyhber area of Peshawar with no fault of theirs. Their lives are under constant fear due to utter failure of successive governments in controlling the gun toting elements, ruling the region unlawfully.
Kanwar Pal Singh urged the Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif to act strongly against such elements, who have threatened the local Sikh businessmen to pay ransom. This unfortunate incident has created fear psychosis in the minds of Pakistani Sikhs, who are in tiny minority. To remove this fear, it’s the constitutional duty of Govt of Pakistan and its all-powerful army.
