AAP MLA likely to be elected president of Chief Khalsa Diwan

The historic 118-year old Sikh organization Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) that has made sizeable contribution in the field of education, is likely to be led by a person who is already working as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and was recently elected as an MLA on the ticket of this party from Amritsar South.

As the CKD’s president Nirmal Singh has recently died of cardiac arrest, presidential polls are being conducted on May 8. The AAP MLA Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar who is currently vice president of the CKD, is contesting the polls. He is likely to win in these elections as his contender Sarabjit Singh, son of former Amritsar MP Kirpal Singh, seems to be the weaker candidate.

Dr. Nijjar had tried to manage his easy victory by making the executive committee resolve conducting of polls with the method of raising hands by the members during general house meetings. However, his attempt failed as the committee had to change its decision under pressure from some members and decided to conduct the polls with secret ballot papers.

Apart from this, Akal Takht Sahib’s directive does also not go in favour of Dr. Nijjar, as per which no non-amritdhari member can cast their votes. The CKD general house has many non-amritdhari members.

The elections will start at 10.00 am and the result will be declared at 4.30 pm on Sunday. With the election of Dr. Nijjar, influence of the ruling party of Punjab will increase in this Sikh organization which is running over 50 educational institutes or other institutions.
